TENNIS
  • Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles)
  • Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court
  • The object of the game is to play the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return
ORIGIN
  • Tennis originated from a 12th century French game calle paume (meaning palm)
  • The game spread and evolved in Europe
  • In 1873, Major Walter Wingfield invented a game called Sphairistike(Greek for playing ball) from which modern outdoor tennis evolved
  • The United States Tennis Association, the governing body for tennis in the U.S., belongs to the International Tennis Federation and follows all rules set by that organization
  • These rules set the standard for tennis competition
Starting Play:
  • A tennis match begins with a coin toss
  • The player who wins the toss can choose to serve or receive the first game or to begin the match on a particular side of the court
Play:
  • After the serve, players must keep the ball in play by returning it over the net before it bounces twice

Scoring:
  • Tennis matches follow an unusual scoring method
  • Both players begin each game with a score of zero, or "love"
  • When a player wins one points, he reaches a score of 15
  • A player's second and third points bring him to 30 and 40, and a fourth point wins him the game
  • If two players reach three points each in a game, the score is "Duece"
  • In most matches, a players must win the best of three sets to win the match
  • In major championships, male players must win the best of five sets to win the match
